Protecting your investment: How to secure your vacation home
February 6, 2021Spring toys insurance: Are your ATVs and golf carts covered?
March 4, 2021Those first nice spring days, if your thoughts don’t turn to strapping on a helmet and hitting the road, you probably don’t own a motorcycle. But motorcycle safety is a real concern, with about 5,000 fatalities each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Before you hit the open road, it’s always a good idea to brush up on your motorcycle safety knowledge. If this is your first season with a bike or you are a seasoned pro, it’s always a good idea so you can stay as safe as possible.
Here are some things to consider on motorcycle safety before hitting the road. Read on:
Weather
We all know that spring can be nice one minute and raining the next, so keeping a close eye on the weather is a great idea for motorcycle safety. Wet roads are slippery roads and that can be a deadly combination on a motorcycle. Water on the road can also obscure potholes and other things that can be dangerous.
Visibility
After a motorcycle accident, one of the reasons for the crash is often that a motorist didn’t see the motorcyclist. Headlights, turn signals, horns: These all can help keep you seen and safe.
Defensive driving
Don’t depend on other motorists to keep you safe. Drive defensively at all times. What does this mean? Make sure other drivers see you when you are changing lanes or turning. Stay out of blind spots. Don’t speed or tailgate.
And look ahead. Watching for things like gravel, road debris and other drivers can save a life. Yours.
Helmets
We know, helmets aren’t always fun or comfortable. But they are the best shot you have at surviving a motorcycle crash, so make sure you wear one EVERY time you hit the road.
If you have a passenger, make sure he or she wears a helmet, too.
