Depending on where you live, or what stage of life you are in, you might have invested in a golf cart for tooling around your neighborhood – or the local golf course. But do you have golf cart insurance?

Golf cart insurance is required in some – but not all – states, so it’s best to read up on what you need to have, or talk to your insurance agent about your coverage.

Generally speaking, if you have a golf cart, you need insurance for it. And depending on where you drive your golf cart, you might need more or less coverage.

Typically, a golf cart insurance policy includes coverage for property damage and bodily injury liability; collision and comprehensive coverage. This will make sure you are protected if your cart is stolen, damaged or if you damage property or injure someone while you are driving it.

While a golf cart might seem harmless, you can seriously injure someone or damage property while driving it and they can get stolen or damaged. Things happen!

Having insurance for your golf cart will give you peace of mind that you are covered if you are found responsible for an accident that injures someone or causes property damage, as the coverage can help pay for repairs or medical bills.

And if you damage your golf cart, collision coverage can help get it repaired or replaced. Comprehensive coverage will help pay for repairs or replacements if your golf cart is stolen or damaged in a storm or fire, to give a few examples.

Most home insurance and auto insurance policies do not cover golf carts, so it’s best not to assume you will be covered under those policies and double check with your insurance agent.

Typically, insurance for your golf cart is an add-on to your homeowner’s or car insurance policy. But you can also buy a separate policy for your golf cart separately if you choose.
